Esther and the King 1960 This biblical tale centers upon Esther (Joan Collins), a young woman escorted away prior to her wedding to another man and taken to the palace of the King Ahasuerus of Persia (Richard Egan). The king is looking for a new bride due to the unfaithful behavior of his previous wife and his selection is Esther, who unbeknownst to him is a Jew. Seeing her people being persecuted by members of the king's staff, Esther decides to dedicate her life to bringing peace to her people through her marriage to King Ahasuerus. Esther is aided in her task by her uncle Mordecai (Dennis O'Dea), a member of the king's staff who helps Esther hide her true heritage in order to fulfill her destiny. Vanity Fair 1932 This cinematic adaptation of William Makepeace Thackeray's novel stars Myrna Loy in her first starring role. This screen version adds a modern twist to the tale with Sharp using older gentleman to increase her status in society, eventually having everything come crashing down upon her.
