With the advent of the WWF (and later, the WWE), female wrestling entered a new phase in its popularity, with the top stars in the game earning considerable amounts of money, and taking up the sport professionally. This film takes a look at the trailblazers of the sport--the women who bucked tradition and decided to become wrestlers in the 1940s and '50s. The recollections veer dramatically between good and bad times, making some fascinating viewing for any enthusiasts of the sport. With all-time greats such as The Fabulous Moolah, Gladys "Killem" Gillem, and Ella Waldek dipping into the memory banks, LIPSTICK & DYNAMITE is a fond look back on a bygone era for women's wrestling.

The now retired wrestlers were and still are powerful role models, with incredible stories and personalities. The talk about events that were important to them and their careers and are often accompanied by appropriate TV clips from their fights. They tell about the ups and downs of early women?s wrestling, the hardships they had to endure, and the glory they reaped. It should probably be noted that unlike the trailer might suggest, there is very little about contemporary wrestlers in this documentary, there is perhaps only a few minutes and none of them are interviewed. This would be a great film to show children that women don?t have to be and act a certain way except there is a fair amount of vulgarity that the old wrestlers use. However if you think your kids are old enough to hear some occasional bad language this might be an inspirational documentary. Fans of wrestling and even just fans of history will probably love this film, it?s about much more than just wrestling, it is about the lifestyle they lived and how they were received by society. |
