Ah, the Western. Men skitter about amongst the dust and horses, coping with friendship, betrayal, and vengeance with their pistols. You know what you?ve signed up for the minute the genre-specific text appears next to the cowboy hat. Marlon Brando?s One-Eyed Jacks is a marvelous specimen of the Western genre, but it isn?t anything more. Had it come into being a little later, One-Eyed Jacks might have benefited from the genre transformation of the 60s and 70s. Still, for what it is, One-Eyed Jacks is good. The plot naturally demands little of its viewers. Abandoned by his friend ?Dad?, ace shot Rio winds up in prison. Escaping five years later, Rio won?t allow anything to hinder his revenge, not even Dad?s status as the sheriff of Monterrey, nor his beautiful step-daughter. The cinematography, which garnered quite a few awards for this film, keeps it interesting. After all, what would a good Western be sans those magnificent rides off into the horizon?
