The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is one of the first and most famous examples of German Expressionism, and its influences can still be seen in cinema today. A young man and his friend visit a traveling fair in the hills of Northern Germany where one of the acts is Dr. Caligari's presentation of a hypnotized sleepwalker named Cesare who can tell the future. Cesare predicts the young man will be dead by the next morning, and he is in fact murdered that night. Loaded with chills and shadows, the twist ending will haunt you.

It belongs to the sadly short-lived German Expressionism movement, characterized by outlandish, misshapen sets and heavy makeup. The results unnerve the viewer, and help the characters appear otherworldly. The camera hardly ever moves, but the director Robert Wiene staves off boredom with frequent cuts. Horror fans may recognize a number of techniques, such as the ominous, looming shadow of impending doom. For all its imitators, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari still managed to cause me some suspense.
The story begins straightforwardly enough. A young man recounts the incredible tale of the suspicious Dr. Caligari and his traveling somnambulist show. Of course, it can be no coincidence that a rash of murders plague the peaceful town just after Dr. Caligari?s arrival. The conclusion of the movie provides a sufficient explanation for the film?s artistic appearance and the supernatural events of the story. I can?t recommend this masterpiece enough.
