This powerful drama, which broached the subject of drug addiction in a stark and realistic manner, may be mild by today's standards, but was a groundbreaking and edgy film in its day. The legendary Frank Sinatra plays addict, Frankie Machine, with Eleanor Parker playing his disabled wife. Based on the novel by Nelson Algren. MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM received three Academy Award Nominations, including Best Actor for Frank Sinatra.

| Customer Comments | | Reviewer: Paul, the drummer on 11/26/07 |  | | Frank, as a recovering junkie who wants to be a big-band drummer while his crippled wife and the local card sharks continue to pull him down. With Arnold Stang as Frank's side-kick and Darren McGavin as the pusher.
Frank had some drum lessons (in real life) from pal Buddy Rich. So the drumming is pretty authentic.
There's also a couple of great scenes with drummer Shelly Manne. One as an unnamed drummer for a striptease show and second as the drummer who lets Frank sit at his drums during an audition with the Shorty Rogers Orchestra.
A great story & a great movie. It's a Hollywood version of a novel by Nelson Algren. |
